Natural arch, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
In Bryce Canyon, the problem isn't finding photo opportunities, it's selecting from the endless number of scenes that grab your attention everywhere you look. You also aren't supposed to get good photos during the middle of the day, but I pulled it off with this shot by climbing up a steep bank and getting close to my subject. From the shady side of the arch, the photo captures red sandstone glowing in the sunlight, with blue sky as a pleasing background. The lesson; if you are willing to work at it, you can usually get the shot any time of day.
Photo tip: Bryce Canyon faces east, so early morning is best for shots with low, raking light. Sunrise and sunset times are posted daily at the visitor center.
